Here are the top 10 residential estates in South Africa, according to AfrAsia

More and more South Africans are moving to estates and gated communities, according to a 2015 report by Business Tech and the primary reasons include safety and affordability. Challenging economic times are another reason that more people are deciding against living in stand-alone homes and choosing sectional ones instead.

One of the most important things that many people think about when they decide to relocate is the location of the home and its proximity to schools and amenities.

AfrAsia Bank’s Top 10 Residential Estates in South Africa report profiles the best estates across the country, looking at a number of factors, such as security features, maintenance, location, design and space.

The report also looks at access to shops, offices, parks, schools, hospitals and parks. Here are the top 10 estates in South Africa, according to AfrAsia,

1. Val de Vie

Val die Vie is located in Paarl in the Western Cape. Home prices in this estate range from from R3 million to R50 million. This estate has “an equestrian centre, a highly rated golf course, natural fynbos scenery, parks, lakes and mountain backdrops”.

2. Steyn City

Steyn City is a relatively new estate located in the north of Johannesburg. It features “an equestrian centre, a golf course and over 250ha of landscaped parkland”. Prices range from between R2 million and R30 million.

3. Zimbali

Featuring a natural lagoon and forest, the Zimbali Estate is located 45km outside Durban. The report notes that this is the most picturesque estate in the country, with a wide variety of bird life. Homes in this estate, which is located on the coast, are priced between R5 million and R50 million.

4. Fancourt

Home prices in this estate are rated between R3 million and R50 million. Located in George in the Western Cape, the report calls this the “top estate for golfers”, with three top-rated courses.

5. Waterfall Equestrian Estate

Located in Midrand in Johannesburg, this estate is the “most exclusive” one in the country. Houses in this estate are priced between R10 million and R70 million. It is close to the Mall of Africa.

6. Steenberg

“The estate houses a large winery and vineyard” and properties are priced between R5 million and R35 million.

7. Mjejane

Mjejane is the sole nature reserve estate in the top 10. Located near the Kruger National Park, residents have access to the country’s Big Five. Potential buyers will need shell out R5 million to R30 million for a house in the estate.

8. Whalerock Ridge

“The 100ha estate offers residents impressive views over Robberg Beach. The bottom gate of the estate is located approximately 100m from the beach. House prices on the estate range from R3 million to R35 million,” says the report.

9. Waterfall Hills Retirement Estate

Located in Midrand, the Waterfall Hills Retirement Estate is the only retirement estate in the top 10.
10. Fransche Hoek Estate

Located in Franschhoek, the wine capital of South Africa, the estate features private vineyards and fruit orchards. Homes are priced between R10 million and R60 million.
