OVER 5 MILLION CHILDREN STILL GOING HUNGRY IN SOUTH AFRICA – REPORT

CAPE TOWN – More than 5.5 million children are still going hungry in this country.

That was revealed in the Annual South African Child Gauge released on Tuesday.

The latest report also shows that a fifth of children don’t live with their parents and 40% are growing up without a father.

Violence, hunger and poor quality education continue to plague South Africa’s children.

Minister in the Presidency Jeff Radebe says that if a child faces any of these challenges, it will compromise their development and opportunities later in life.

Radebe was the keynote speaker at the annual South African Child Gauge, hosted by UCT’S Children’s Institute.

He says that some progress has been made with 77.7% of children living in a formal housing environment.

“Globally it is recognised that investing in childhood development is cost effective and beneficial for long time development.”

He adds that the well-being of children is one of the key priorities in the national development plan for 2030.
