A NEW WAVE OF CRIME PLAGUES JOBURG CBD

Families, Workers, and shoppers are gripped with fear of crime in the Johannesburg CBD. The number of violent robberies, some at gunpoint, spiral out control.

Street robberies are happening all day every day with no police presence. This video is of a schoolboy on his way to school who was robbed by four men in the busy Bok and Twist streets in Johannesburg CBD. There is another video of an attempted robbery on a man walking on the same streets in the CBD.

City of Joburg mayor Herman Mashaba says undocumented people living in the city make it difficult to combat crime.

 

Vumacam, a new subsidiary of fibre infrastructure will be playing a huge impact in combating crime in the Johannesburg suburb by installing some 15,000 CCTV cameras in the suburbs. The new company, Vumacam, is erecting cameras that transmit a live feed to a data centre via Vumatel’s fibre infrastructure. The live CCTV footage is sold to security companies that operate in the suburbs, says Ashleigh Parry, managing director of Vumacam.
