NIGERIANS’ INFLUENCE IN THE UK GROWS

Nigerian lawyer predicts a Nigeria born MP in SA soon

No fewer than seven Nigerians have been re-elected into the United Kingdom parliament in a recent election: five females and two males.
The Nigerian Member of Parliament (MPs) are: Kemi Badenoch representing Saffron Walden; Chuka Umunna representing Streatham; Kate Osamor representing Edmonton; Bim Afolami representing Hitchin and Harpenden; Fiona Onasanya representing Peterborough; Helen Grant representing Maidstone and The Weald and Chi Onwurah representing Newcastle.
According to UK Telegraph, Onwurah, who contested under the Labour Party, won 24,071 votes to defeat Tory candidate, Steve Kyte, who had 9, 134 votes. Similarly, Umunna, 38, of the Labour Party, won the election to represent Streatham which she had represented since 2008.

A UK based Human Capital Development Strategist, Dayo Olomu opined that this is a welcome development for Nigeria when he congratulated the MPs.

Nigerians living in South Africa believe the same scenario may play out in South Africa soon.

Kunle Tejumade, a Nigerian lawyer in South Africa says a South African with a Nigerian father will be a Member of Parliament not too long in South Africa.

In his words: “The Nigerian community in South Africa is almost fully ripe for a parliamentarian of Nigerian descent. It may even be a Nigerian with a South African citizenship that will break the ice”.

Tom Ifeju, a Nigerian business man differs with Tejumade. “With the level of xenophobic sentiments in South Africa, especially against Nigerians, I don’t see any Nigerian in South African government. South Africa is not yet mature for such liberal feat”.
