THE DAYS AND TIMES WHEN MOST HIJACKINGS HAPPEN IN SOUTH AFRICA

Back in 2016 the National Hijacking Prevention Academy (NHPA) updated its hijacking prevention guidelines. These guidelines include times, areas and patterns typically followed by criminals in hijackings.

Back then, the NHPA found that stealing parked vehicles has become increasingly difficult due to the popularisation of anti-theft devices.

While the NHPA have found that some trends do change, what stays pretty constant is the time of day and the days of the week when hijackings take place.

Being aware is critical when it comes to preventing hijackings, so this information could be very useful.

Days of the week most hijackings occur

According to the NHPA’s data for September 2015 to September 2016, there is a pretty obvious pattern when it comes to days of week when most hijackings occur.

Unsurprisingly, Fridays are the most popular days for being hijacked, followed by Tuesdays. Saturday and Sunday are the least likely days while your chances of being hijacked are pretty even on a Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Time of day you are most likely to be hijacked

The NPHA data shows that between 16:00 and 20:00 are the highest risk times, followed by 04:00 – 08:00. From 12:00 – 16:00 also carries a risk while 20:00 -04:00 is significantly lower. From 08:00 – 12:00 carries a moderate risk.

The reason for this is pretty obvious – the high-risk times is when people are returning home from work or just leaving for work.

How many hijackings happen in South Africa every year?

According to statistics released by the South African Police Service in March 2017, a total of 12 743 vehicles were hijacked in South Africa between April and December 2016 – that’s 14.9% more than in the 2015/16 financial year.

SAPS says that 1416 vehicles are hijacked in South Africa each month – one every 32 minutes.

Where do most hijackings happen in South Africa?

According to Pro-ActiveSA, Gauteng (7 367), KwaZulu Natal (2 493) and the Western Cape (2032) had the highest number of reported hijackings in that period.
