TWO DAYS TO CLEAR DEBRIS FROM PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE COLLAPSE?

JOHANNESBURG – Emergency services officials, law enforcement officers and experts are currently still on the scene of a pedestrian bridge collapse along the N3 Geldenhuys Interchange, in which five people have been injured.

A seven-year-old child is among the injured in Wedensday morning’s collapse. It is understood that the bridge fell on three trucks and a car.

Motorists are being urged to use alternative routes, as the N3 has been closed in both directions.

Authorities say it may take up to two days to completely clear the debris.

South African National Road Agency Limited (Sanral) spokesperson Vusi Mona says: “In the meantime, we’re advising motorists to avoid the area, to use alternative routes while we wait for officials to clear the road.”

Mona has also cautioned against speculating about the cause of the collapse.

“People, especially those who are in responsible positions, should refrain from offering opinions that are not expert opinions. The police might come with a theory, Sanral might come with a theory. So let us wait.”
